'Heroes Wear Masks' Cosplay Music Video Launch

Earlier this year, and after the news that Calgary Expo 2020 was canceled, we decided to produce and release a Quarantine Cosplay Music Video. We asked the Cosplay Community to rally together while respecting social distancing guidelines and help us make something positive during the first wave of COVID. They delivered and we made some cool art during a hard time. 

And now the second wave is here.  

While many have adopted wearing a mask as a social norm, there are still people who protest against wearing a mask. All the while COVID numbers around the world continue to rise.  

To quote Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises. “The mask is not for you, it’s to protect the people you care about.” 

We have gone almost an entire year without seeing our Cosplay Friends. Even San Diego Comic-Con was canceled this year. The decision to cancel was the right one but there’s definitely a sadness that comes with it. 

In September, while we ruminated about missing Edmonton Expo, the team decided to once again rally the Cosplay Community. Instead of doing another ‘Quarantine’ Cosplay Music Video, we decided to put a call to action behind it.  

The Cosplay Community came together again to help deliver a message: Heroes Wear Masks. 

Heed the call. Help those that continue to work in the front lines by Wearing a Mask.  

Let’s kick COVID’s butt so we can see each other at the next convention.

Submissions Now Open For 'Heroes Wear Masks' Cosplay Music Video

It’s time for another Cosplay Music Video in quarantine. We believe that there are heroes among us, and we want to pay tribute to them with another compilation video show entirely by you. Example: Cosplay Music Video – Quarantine Edition (May 2020) 

The M’Guphynn Media team have been featuring the cosplayers at both Edmonton Expo and Calgary Expo in CMV’s since 2013. With the news that the cancellation of the 2020 edition of both expos, we wanted to once again bring together the cosplay community to create another CMV from home. We will accept HD video footage of your cosplay creations from September    1-30, 2020, and compiling them into a release at the end of the month. And don’t forget to feature a mask in some way in your shots. Get creative! The more dynamic your footage, the better. Feel free to send multiple clips per submission. 

RULES AND REGULATIONS 

Videos must adhere to all current public health advisories and protocols. Any videos that appear to engage in unsafe practices or occur in high-traffic public areas will not be accepted. 

Videos Specifications:  

• Minimum resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p)  

• with a minimum frame rate of 60fps (frames per second)  

• H264 compression is preferred where possible 

• Landscape Orientation  

• MUST INCLUDE A MASK 

Most DSLR cameras and smartphones are capable of capturing footage with these settings. Tutorial for iPhone settings.  

Videos must not depict any realistic violence, illegal activity, hateful sentiment, or explicit sexuality.  

By submitting a video, you agree to release full usage and broadcast rights of the footage for use in a Cosplay Music Video as well as any and all promotional and marketing materials in perpetuity to M’Guphynn Media Ltd. 

Please include the full names of each cosplayer, as well as any social media accounts to tag. This is so we can credit you properly.

In 2016, putting together our annual Calgary Cosplay Music Video was therapeutic, as our home town of Fort McMurray was evacuated during the Horse River Fire. Four years later, another tragedy has occurred. As I write this post, our community is returning to ‘normal’ after being partially evacuated due to a massive flood of our Downtown area impacting 13,000 people. Many insurance companies do not cover this type of flooding. We do not make our videos for monetary gain, we make them “for the Cos.” You don’t need to dress like a hero to be one. Donating to any one of the following charities would help our community immensely during this time.

With that, we are so happy to share our first, and hopefully only, Quarantine Cosplay Music Video.

With events being postponed due to COVID19, included San Diego Comic-Con, our hopes for Calgary Expo this year faded. As we waited at home, the team at M’Guphynn Media came up with an idea ‘outside the box.’ What if we let the Cosplayers come to us? In April we asked Cosplayers to submit their Quarantine Cosplay Videos and the response was amazing.

This video is very special to us as we would have loved to see all of our Cosplay Family at Calgary Expo this year. The Calgary Expo’s decision to postpone until next year was the right one but we were still saddened we wouldn’t get to connect in person with the lovely people we sometimes only get to see once or twice a year.

We have no doubt that Calgary Expo 2021 will be bigger and better in every way and we look forward to seeing all of you there.

A huge thanks to all the Cosplayers who submitted their phenomenal cosplay. We had so much fun checking some surprise pet cosplay too.

Submit your Quarantine Cosplay

The M’Guphynn Media team has been featuring the cosplayers at both Edmonton Expo and Calgary Expo in Cosplay Music Videos since 2013. With the news that the 2020 edition of Calgary Expo has been rescheduled for the summer, we wanted to give an opportunity for our cosplay community to take part in a new Cosplay Music Video right from home. We will be accepting video footage of your cosplay creations throughout the month, and compiling them into a release at the end of the month. We encourage crafters to continue to create and level-up their cosplays while cooped up at home and unable to gather together.

Get creative with your shots, the more dynamic the better. Feel free to send multiple clips per submission.

We understand that cosplay is often a group endeavor, however, we ask that all submitted videos feature no more than two individuals. Any videos that appear to engage in unsafe practices or occur in high-traffic public areas will not be accepted.
